How to Ask Someone on a Date

Posted on Sunday, February 19, 2012

Has that friend of yours been giving you butterflies in your stomach lately? Has the new girl in class got you heart beat pounding? Maybe you’ve finally realized how big a crush you have on your next-door neighbor? We all find ourselves in this situation on way or another. You want to get to know them better and show that you’re interested, but you don’t know how to bring your self to ask them out on a date.

The first thing to do is remind your self that, contrary to popular belief, the world will not end, nor will the earth swallow you up whole and you will not die of nervousness. They could say no, they most likely will say yes and you’ve got nothing to lose by asking! All you’ve got to do is be confident and ask.

That being said, different people will work up the courage differently. For some guys, myself included, a quick chest workout gives them the confidence needed. For others playing some fun, upbeat music with some friends gets them going. For others still, a short solo meditation/calming session works best to help them find the right mindset. Many girls I’ve spoken with find talking to their girl friends the best way to get ready for the chase. No matter what gets your head in the zone, do it. Never underestimate the power of having your friends around to help you out.

Now you’ve worked up the courage and are standing in from of them. Now what? Keep calm. Speak slowly. Plan out what you are going to say. Be casual. Ask if they would like to get a cup of coffee or tea someday this week. Ask if they’d like to see that new movie that you are both interested in or go to the upcoming dance with you. Don’t make a big deal out of it. If they say yes, set a plan with them and possibly exchange cell phone numbers. If they want to do it some other time, be flexible and work something out with them. If they say no, don’t get angry or sad or embarrassed. Agree with them and offer to do it some other time. You can now congratulate your self for having successfully asked for a date. Notice that the world is still turning and you are still breathing.
